STREAK SAVER: Lady Cards turn back Tyler

A gritty 66-62 win Wednesday night against Tyler at Cardinal Gym keeps the 15th-ranked Lady Cards in position to claim at least a share of a Region XIV Conference championship for a 17th straight year.

The Lady Cards' win, coupled with Jacksonville's 53-51 loss to Blinn, leaves them tied with Jacksonville, ineligible for the postseason due to NJCAA sanctions, and Panola tied atop the conference standings at  15-4 and one game remaining. Panola maintained its share of the lead with an 84-78 win against Bossier Parish.

The season wraps up Saturday with the Lady Cards (25-4) at Kilgore (19-9). Jacksonville hosts San Jacinto and Panola is at Paris.

Against Tyler, the Lady Cards trailed 45-40 early in the fourth quarter before finding the right gear to finish the job. With 1:02 left, the Lady Cards were up 64-59, but had to hold off one last Tyler surge.

Arleighshya McElroy and Michal Miller combined for 44 points to lead the Lady Cards. McElroy had fired in 28 points, including two clutch free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win. She had three three-pointers. Miller had 16 points.

Mercedes Brooks finished with nine for the Lady Cards and Jada Wright eight.

The Lady Cards have now won 25 or more games in a season for 11 straight years.

The win also assures the Lady Cards will be no worse than the No. 2 seed in the regional tournament March 6-10 at Jacksonville.
