ALMOST GO TIME: 2025 football season approaches

ALMOST GO TIME: 2025 football season approaches

The Cardinals are motivated going into the season.

That is what missing the Southwest Junior College Football Conference regional playoffs for only the fourth time since 2010 will tend to do.

"Our standards are high and not competing for the conference and regional championships is certainly not what we are about," said Cardinal head coach Sherard Poteete, who begins his eighth year at the helm of the program and 14th overall at the college. "We have high expectations. Our fans have high expectations."

The Cardinals went 5-4 for their sixth straight winning season in 2024, but a couple of agonizingly close losses to start conference play left them on the outside looking in come playoff time. They went 3-4 in league play and finished fifth.

Though there may be as many as 50 new names on the roster this season, the Cardinals have 19 lettermen returning, including six defensive and four offensive starters.

"We have enough production returning on both sides of the ball to feel good about our potential to succeed," Poteete said. "Defensively, I feel confident where we are at this point."

The Cardinals have added 19 transfers (please see list elsewhere on this page) to help with the return to the playoffs. Included in the healthy number are five defensive backs, five offensive linemen and three tight ends.

"We definitely got better with those additions," Poteete said. "We added both experience and talent, both of which should make us better more quickly."

HOW TO GET THERE

The three keys to a successful season, according to Poteete:

      1. Stay healthy – "Always the No. 1 thing."

      2. QB play – "Gotta find 'the guy'"

      3. The DL – "Could be special"

FROSH FOCUS

Poteete said here are two true freshmen to keep an eye on this season:

Braedon Walton – WR, 6-2, 177, Ashdown, AR (Ashdown HS)

Caydan Slater – LB, 6-0, 190, Missouri City, TX (Fort Bend Hightower HS)

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Poteete will get a chance to coach his youngest son Parker this season:

Parker, a 6-3, 208-pound linebacker, signed with the Cardinals back in February after a stellar career at nearby Malakoff High School. In his last two seasons there, he and the Tigers combined for a 35-1 record, winning the Class 3A, Division 1 state championship in 2023 and finishing runner-up this past season.

As a junior, in helping the Tigers to a 16-0 record, Parker was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player in the title game – a 14-7 win against Franklin.

MOVING ON UP

Poteete is the fifth winningest coach in the history of the program with a 42-25 record.

He has a chance to move past Tommy Steigleder in fourth place this season. Steigleder in seven seasons from 1957-63 went 45-29-2, leaving Poteete just three back.

YOURS, MINE, OURS

Poteete said the SWJCFC, from top to bottom, is the best league in the nation and is "anybody's to win."

"It has always been a tough league to predict," Poteete said. "And now, with rosters turning over as much as they do in a year's time, it is even more so.

"The key is staying healthy, of course, and finding "the guy" at quarterback."
