THE BEAT GOES ON: No. 13 Cardinals take pair of wins

The 13th-ranked Cardinal softball team continued to rock 'n' roll Saturday in doubleheader action at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park.

The Cardinals took care of Northeastern Junior College out Colorado in convincing fashion, winning 8-0 in Game 1 and 9-1 in Game 2. Both games ended after five innings via the run rule.

The Cardinals went to 17-1 on the season and are likely to move upward in the NJCAA rankings when the first poll of the regular season is released today. The Cardinals, who have won six straight, have seen 13 of their wins recorded by way of the run rule.

The Cardinals are schedule to return to action Wednesday at home against Angelina. Doubleheader action at Drumgoole Field at Cain Park starts at 2 p.m.

GAME 1

Cardinals 8, Northeastern 0

Have yourself a game, Jaeden Burnham.

The Cardinal catcher had a grand slam home run and a three-run shot for a seven-RBI performance in the first game.

The Cardinals had 10 hits in the win and did not commit and error.

Molly Gilbert went 3-for-3 at the plate. Sydney Murphy also had multiple hits with two.

Miranda Pena was the winning pitcher, narrowly missing her second no-no of the season. She allowed one hit and struck out 11.

GAME 2

Cardinals 9, Northeastern 1

(5 innings)

A seven-run fifth inning put the Cardinals into the win column again in the second game.

Madison Bailey went 3-for-3 to lead a 10-hit Cardinal attack. Allie Clair Jones and Murphy had two hits each. Jones drove in three runs.

Northeastern scored a run in the top of the first inning but was quiet the rest of the way.

Pitching relief of Clarissa Valedez, Haylie Jamie was the winner in the circle. She gave up just one hit and fanned 11.
