FOR ALL THE MARBLES: Cardinals reach title game

A milestone win has put the Cardinal softball team in  position for another.

The Cardinals were a 1-0 winner against Galveston in the Region XIV Tournament's seond round Sunday night in Bossier City, LA — the win was their 50th of the season, which is a first  in program history.

Now 50-10, the win also moved fourth-year head coach Maria Winn-Ratliff's squad into the championship game against Paris today at 5 p.m., where the Cardinals will attempt to claim their first-ever regional title and third NJCAA tournament appearance.

In 2021, the Cardinals won the Region XIV North Zone tournament title when the tournament was split into two events due to COVID restrictions still in place. In qualifying for their first national tournament in 2013, the Cardinals were the regional runner-up to Paris.

Today's title game will be the fifth meeting between the Cardinals and Paris this season. The two swept each other on the road during conference play.

The Cardinals also own a 9-1 win against Alvin in their regional tournament opener, setting up the game against Galveston. Paris had defeated San Jacinto, 11-0, and Navarro, 14-2.

Paris is 49-9 on the year.

Alizah Fields hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to give the Cardinals the win.

Miranda Pena pitched a gem in the circle, going the route and surrendering three hits and striking out 6. She is now 25-5 on the season.
